Name: Dustin Cobalt
Age: 20
Birthday 14/08
Gender: Male
Hometown: Cutler Bay, south of Miami
Face Claim: Jake Abel
Nationality: American
Languages Spoken: English
Description:
Dustin has short brownish-blonde hair and blue eyes. He keeps his face clean shaven when possible, but sometimes he falls behind and grows a bit of stubble. He can be generally described as tall and lean, but his hobbies of swimming and surfing have kept his build from becoming too wimpy looking. He can usually be found wearing a plain t-shirt and pants, sometimes with another shirt thrown on over top. While at one time he preferred to wear flip-flops, he now usually sticks to plain old shoes since they are easier to run in. Oh yeah, and he is also currently missing the front half of his left arm.
Skills: Shuffleboard Champion, Surfing, Lifeguard Training, puzzle solving
Personality: Dustin is an observant person who takes in his surroundings visually. He enjoys solving various types of puzzles in his spare time. While his concentration would never waver while working as a lifeguard, sometimes he will become lost in thought during idol conversation. He tends to be very apologetic and submissive when he knows he messed up. However, if he knows he is in the right, and it is something important, Dustin will voice it, even if only mildly.
Dustin is probably one of the few people who can sympathize with the yeerks while still being wholeheartedly against them. He sees and understands why they are taking over human bodies and pities them for it. But at the same time he can not ignore the yeerks’ methods and all of the hardships they have brought upon the human race. While Dustin would be entirely willing to sit down and discuss things with a yeerk in a civilized manner, he realizes it would never happen and so aims to resist them in different ways.
Still, he is not sure if he would be able to outright kill a yeerk or controller if it was sitting right in front of him if it isn’t self-defense. And Dustin prays he will never be put in a situation where he finds out.
Bio/History: Born and raised in Cutler Bay, Florida, Dustin led a relatively average life before the invasion. He went to school, argued with his parents, babysat his little sister, hung out with friend at the beach, and worked as a lifeguard during the summer. But alien invasions tend to make you forget all that.
After the yeerk epidemic became well known, Dustin’s family did what a lot of families in the area seemed to be doing. They packed up a bunch of doomsday supplies and tried to get away from mainstream society. But his parents made one big mistake in their decision making process. They didn’t go far enough.
Their family had settled in an area a few miles from the nearest suburbs, where they managed to get by well enough for several weeks. But eventually Dustin’s father decided to head into town to forage for more supplies. Dustin wanted to go with him, but he was forced to stay behind and help with other chores.
Dustin was out collecting wood when he heard the scream and the sound of things breaking. He rushed back to their camp to see his father holding his hand over his mother’s mouth as the tail end of a slug crawled in through her ear. His three year old sister was sitting there, crying by his mothers leg, when his mother’s face went from complete terror to nice and friendly.
“Well now. That’s not so bad,” his mother said. Dustin furrowed his brow. Wasn’t his mother one of the aliens now?
“I brought one for you too, Dusty,” his father admitted. “Why don’t you come over here and you’ll see what we’re talking about.” Dustin took a step toward his parents, confused. Then a look of distorted terror reappeared on his mothers face, if only for a split second. It was then that Dustin knew he had to run.
He escaped and made camp, but returned the following morning to try and save his parents and sister, but they were already gone. After that he wandered around, living off of what he could find. He eventually fell in with a resistance group and helped them in any way he could.
But his group didn’t really know what they were doing and often had to run. Either from being discovered, or from trying to execute a poorly planed out counter attack. It was while running from one of these attacks that his right arm got severed by a hork-bijar. He barely escaped, and when he did, Dustin still almost died from blood loss and infection.
But he still managed to live on. When he finally recovered enough, he decided to leave the resistance group, figuring he could make it better on his own. He set up a living space in a semi-demolished building’s basement. It was during his time there that he met up with the animorphs.
Starting Morphs:
Land: Eastern Ribbon Snake (type of garden snake)
Bug: Grasshopper
Other: American Flamingo (If possible. I figured it was pretty similar to a heron.)
Scene with Parent:
“Are you sure you wouldn’t rather have me read you a story?” Dustin’s father asked him, just as he had every night that week.
“Nuh uh. I like the word searches.”
“Ok, ok, you win. We’ll do a word search. But only one. It’s a school night.” His dad grabbed a word search off of Dustin’s dresser and a green crayon from the box sitting open next to it. He then walked over and sat on the edge of Dustin’s bed, where the boy was already half tucked in under some racecar bed sheets.
“How about we look for “outer space” words tonight?” his father asked, trying to use a spooky voice.
“Sure. Oh, there’s planet.”
“That was fast. How about comet?”
“Hmm. No, but I see spaceship. The ones that take up a whole row are always easy though.” His dad just nodded in agreement. “Hey dad, do think there are real spaceships up in space?”
“Well, yes. People fly spaceships up into space all the time.”
“No, I mean like with aliens and stuff. Do you believe in aliens?”
“Well,” his dad put a thoughtful finger to his chin, “I suppose I believe that they can be real. But I doubt we will ever see them if they are?”
“Why is that?”
“What is there on earth that would be interesting to people who already know how to go to other planets?”
Dustin just laughed and returned to the crossword puzzle. If he ever met an alien, he would show them how much fun crossword puzzles were.
