I've seen these types of boards run successfully (and, as a magnificent understatement, "unsuccessfully") in the past. In any case, the idea is that you make a board that is locked to the general public, and even most players, unless they choose to opt-in (this can be done through a password, or through User Groups, which I think is generally easier and smoother).
The Afterdark boards house threads that are more M-rated, and not necessarily essential to basic plots. These could be threads, ongoing stories, or one-shot writings. There could be a section for canon and non-canon. Ultimately, the board becomes a place where anything too sexual or too violent or too out-and-out weird goes.
Theoretically, you could have a board for each faction, or just a couple central boards (divided by canon and non, or some such), and these wouldn't show up for anyone but those who want access to them.
Now, to touch on something that kind of has to be mentioned:
I've seen worlds, universes, of drama spawn from not necessarily an "Afterdark" system itself, but the type of players who use it as a crutch to RP. Meaning: if it turns out that someone is RPing there three times as much as on the regular boards (even when there are places to play on the regular boards), problems start to arise. RP breeds drama in general, more explicit RP doubly so.
I suggest this because I think I'm the type of writer that could potentially make use of it at some point. I've had to put warnings in my threads before (namely for violence), and knowing that other folks are more sensitive to that stuff I've noticed that I've usually toned it down quite a bit. I feel like having a designated place where all the more uncomfortable stuff is held, away from anyone that would just stumble into it, might be cool.
