Kovu:
Kovu stared out fro the alley, waiting for someone to pass. His stomach grumbled, and he started to feel weak. A man passed by, finally. Kovu darted toward the street, careful as not to make too much noise. He slipped behind the controller, and quickly dug into his pocket. He quickly pulled out a tan wallet. Kovu walked a few feet away and examined the prize. He pulled out its contents..................ugh two dollars. That wouldn't pay for much. He looked to his side, and his worse nightmare became reality. There was a kid standing there, 15, 16, 17 at the most, he had dark brown eyes, and hair, and he looked at me with a curious face. Kovu ran deep into the alley, most if not all the humans around here were controllers, and Kovu would not become one of them. he ran father, but he suddenly hit a dead end, he turned to face his fate.
Matt:
Matt had seen the boy pickpocket the controller. No controller would have done that. From what he'd learned from Jullian and from shopping himself, controllers were practically given everything they needed. This boy was stealing money, a task a controller who could easily get things without it wouldn't have undertaken.
Matt had been seen by the boy though and he'd taken off down an alley. The seventeen year-old faction leader sprinted after him. When the reached a dead end the boy whirled around to face Matt. Reaching behind him he took out the dracon beam he carried as part of his disguise and set it on the ground. He took a few steps away from it with his hands visible before speaking. "I'm not going to hurt you and I'm not a controller, though whether you believe that will most likely depend on if you trust me enough that I can show you something."
Kovu:
Kovu kneeled on the floor, frightened at the thoght of the dracon beam, the boy set the gun down, and tried to explain himself. Kovu didn't budge, he had heard of these tricks. He pulled out a knife, and ponted it at the boy threatiningly. "Look, I don't know what you want, but I will never allow a filthy worm to slither in my head!" The boy looked at him, he seemed at a loss, unsure of what to do.
Matt:
Matt's eyes stayed on the knife now, even as he spoke. "Neither would I. If they got into my head they'd learn far too much." It was obvious this boy didn't trust Matt worth a darn and the L.A. leader couldn't blame him. Especially in the outfit Matthew currently wore, his disguise for trips into town, he looked like just another controller.
He had no choice but to show him what he meant. Matt focused on the little used DNA of his ferret morph. The fur began sprouting on his face, forming lighter and darker patches. One dark patch shaped a mask around his eyes. His size dwindled away as his body reshaped and a tale sprouted. He began to get buried in the looser clothing that comprised his disguise and just walked out of it. Eventually he stood fully ferret in front of the other boy.
<<Now do you believe I'm not a controller? I'm what's called an Animorph. We're the resistance force against the yeerks.>> The words would be the same voice the boy had heard, but now coming directly into his head.
Kovu:
Kovu kept his eyes on the boy. He stayed as still as a board until the transformation. When he heard the voice in his head, the knife dropped to the floor, and Kovu stood up. "You got to be kidding right?" Kovu almost laughed in pure astonishment. "I heard that you guys existed, but I could never imagine....." Kovu fell silent, a sudden though cameto him "What do you want with me?" The ferret stared up at him.
Matt:
The ferret tilted it's head as the boy spoke. People always found the Animorphs to be something really interesting when it came to meeting them. Matt had never had a person who didn't see him morph and get surprised. He himself had been rather shocked when a talking cheetah had saved him from the construction site Raven had found him in.
<<What do I want with you? Oh, the same thing I want with any free human. For the price of proving you are free, three days in solitary confinement which would kill a yeerk, you have the chance to join the local faction of the resistance which I am the leader of.>> He began to demorph, but added quickly before his thought speak ability vanished, <<It's not that I don't trust you, it's just that we can't take any chances ever. Not when we're the only resistance the planet has.>>
Kovu:
Kovu staed "A resistance here?" Kovu's mind was racing He imagined what this could mean, a chance to fight back, a chance to have a home, maybe even a hot meal every now and again. "Sure I don't mind stayin' in a place where I don't have to steal my own food" The boy finished demorphing, and now stood, fully human. "Name's Kovu, just tell me what I need to do" A smile crept across the boys face.
Matt:
"Okay, Kovu," said Matt as he picked up and slipped back on the baggy jeans, sunglasses, and over sized coat that comprised his disguise. "I'm Matthew, or Matt if your prefer the short version. What I need you to do will be help me get the shopping I came here to do done and then you can follow me to the base we have outside of town. Once then, like I said, we'll need to make sure you really aren't a controller and then you can get the ability to morph."
We. With that word Matt was implying that there was at least one other Animorph. Actually, there were several. His faction was up to.... something like seven members now counting him and subtracting the Kinley brothers. Kovu would be their eighth and would probably take the bed in the loft that Stevert had vacated.
Matt walked to the opening of the alley and then motioned for Kovu to follow. Once they'd grabbed the food they could head back, and the others would probably comment on Matt's odd luck with never managing to go into town without meeting a recruit.
Kovu:
Kovu walked out of they alleyway and went shopping, without having to steal anything. Then they went to base, Matt exlained that it was called "The Haunt" it seemed rather old. They walked inside and Matt led the way to the storage room. He closed the door, and locked Kovu inside. Those three days were amazingly boring. besides from the ocasional trip to the bathroom, the day consisted of nothing but sleeping and eating. During the finalhour Kovu waited anxiously at the door, waiting to be let out.
Matt:
Matt sighed. The three days when they'd been holding Kovu had gone by fairly uneventfully. Now it was time to give the newest member some morphs. It was obvious to Matt that Kovu wanted to join. The interest he'd expressed made it really very obvious. Then again, Matt hadn't seen anyone yet who turned the offer of the morphing power down.
Matt walked to the storage room and opened the door, the last few minutes ticking away as he stood there. "Congratulations. You're yeerk free and an Animorph since I figure you're still interested. Grab some clothes from the pile in the corner, you can change into them in the bathroom. Make sure they fit you fairly tight. Morphing in anything loose leads to nudity when you demorph."
Kovu:
Kovu quickly changed into a tight T-shirt and biker shorts. His heart was beating fast. He was so anxious and so amazed. He wondered what morphing would feel like, and he was curious as to how the whole thing worked. He followed Matt into a romm. Matt turned to him, and started to explain the process.
Matt:
They were in the living room now, where Matt had lead Kovu. He'd brought the cube in with him, leaving the vials of DNA outside. They'd need to go out there when Kovu tried his morphs anyways. For now, though, Matt wanted to stay inside as it seemed he spent a lot of his time outside of the Haunt.
"Okay," he said pulling the cube out, "this is called the escafil device. It's where Animorphs get the power to morph. All you need to do is touch it. You'll feel a slight tingle, but probably nothing more than that. However, morphing has its rules. For one, you can only turn into an animal after acquiring the DNA of it. We have vials of DNA, blood really, so that isn't a problem. The other is there is a two hour limit on being in morph. Any longer than that and you trade your human form and morphing powers for the form of the animal you're in."
He held the cube out to Kovu now.
Kovu:
Kovu took careful not of the limitations, and motioned toward the cube. It was simply, just a plain blue cube, but something seemed strange about it. Kovu rested his hand on top of the box. A warm, pleasurable vibration slowly moved up his arm. After it was over, he brought his hand back to his side, and looked at Matt "Ok now what?"
Matt:
Matt watched as Kovu placed his hand on the cube and then brought it back to his side. He gave a crooked grin as the boy looked at him again. "You're the first person I've seen get the power who hasn't looked at their hand like they expect it to be somehow different. That's the thing about the morphing power, it's not really noticeable until you try your first morph out."
He turned and started towards the door of the Haunt, the one leading to the beach and the deck. "For that we need to go outside. Most morphs don't do so well inside buildings and some are way too big to try out in a building." He lead the way onto the porch where the cooler sat and started looking through the vials as Kovu joined him on the deck.
Matt picked up a vial containing the DNA of a squirrel monkey, the same DNA that had been given to Jullian and Aubrey as well. "Try this for starters. It's a little more similar to human so the changes will be less drastic the first time around. Just pour some of that on your hand and picture the animal in your mind to acquire it."
Kovu:
Kovu did as he was told, puring a few drops of the animals blood upon his hand, he focused on the mokey, though he had never seen it before, he had the basic idea of a mokey. An unusual calm fell uon him. He slowly breathed then wiped his hand on his shorts. "Ok now the big question, how exactly do I turn into this animal?"
Matt watched Kovu acquire the DNA. Good, another member who wasn't squeamish at the idea of using blood. Some members did have an issue with that. Steve had even blacked out the first time he'd acquired a morph. Matthew himself had a little issue, but he'd acquired enough morphs now that he was able to deal with it.
"Morphing is easy. Just focus on an image of the animal in your mind and kind of will yourself to become that animal. It might help to close your eyes since some people have issues watching the transformation take place when it's them self doing it." He'd noticed that before. Watching someone else morph and then watching your own body change into that of an animal really was different, and if it was your first time it could be awkward. Matt could still remember morphing bat the first time, though it was getting hazy and starting to blend with all the other times he'd used that morph.
Kovu:
Kovu stared at Matt, and then began to focus., He kept his eyes wide opne, not daring to shut them. The first thing that happened was his tail popped out. A long fleshy tail, like a rat. "Ugh" Kovu said out of pure disgust. Kovu looked away an tried to regain his focus. Next his ears rotated foward and he began to shrink. He watched as Matt went from eye level, to the size of a small building. Fur started to sprout on his face, and rippled down his body, ending at his tail. Finally he was done morphing.
Matt:
Matthew watched the morph take place. Kovu's initial reaction to his hairless tail being the first change was amusing. Matt hadn't seen that happen before, though he'd seen a lot of other odd changes. His own most interesting one was sprouting his butterfly wings first so that he'd looked like some sort of fairy. He hadn't actually started looking like anything else until after he'd shrunken down to butterfly size.
Now the morph was done and Matt waited for the inevitable, the instincts kicking in. So far the squirrel monkey had panicked and gotten the better of any new member to morph it. Matt sort of expected a similar reaction from Kovu to the ones Aubrey and Jullian had had and that he'd need to coach Kovu through getting control. There was always the chance of a pleasant surprise though.
Kovu:
One moment Kovu was staring up at Matt, the next, he was running straight for a tree. He had experience this before, the huge fear of getting caught and getting killed. Kovu clamped down on the familliar emoion, and skidded to a stop in front of the tree. Then, just for the heck of it he climbed up the tree, jumped to the deck and ended up perched on Matt's head. <<No this isn't strange, not at all, really>> Mattt laughed as Kovu jumped to the porch, the small monkey stared up at him.
Matt:
Matt watched as the monkey took off towards one of the trees and sighed, but it came to a halt. His gaze followed it up the tree, to the porch roof, and then he lost Kovu as he landed on Matt's head. He chuckled a little and the words Kovu said. "That's the first time the monkey's instincts haven't gotten the better of a new Animorph. You share that morph, identical DNA, with two of the other members of the faction, Jullian and Aubrey."
Kovu jumped back onto the porch, a 5' 7" drop from the top of the L.A. leader's head. "Okay, so you've figured out thought speak and controlling the instincts. Remember that with some morphs you'll need to find a balance since, for an example, a bird knows how to fly and you don't. Also, thought speak can be projected to one person or multiple people, it's up to you who hears what you say. Now, why don't you demorph and we'll give you your second morph. Demorphing is the same as morphing, just focus on your human self. Also, morphing and demorphing will heal damage done to your human body since it isn't part of your DNA."
Kovu:
Kovu began the demorph, the first thing to happen was his tail retracted, he looked like a smalll ape. Then he started to grow, and at the same time the hair began to fade away. His face melted back to normal and his morphing clothes appeared on his body, "Now that was wierd" Kovu steadied him self preparing for another animal. He was already ppreety tired.
Matt:
It looked like Kovu was getting tired when he finished demorphing. The process did require energy and Matt wasn't actually sure how much of that the new member had had when they first had started this process. Still, there was only one other new morph for now. That one probably wouldn't drain Kovu too much more.
"Ok, next we have a magpie. Birds are always a good starter morph, plus it's a great way to learn balancing the control between yourself and the animal. Like I said, you don't know how to fly and the bird will so while you need to be able to control where you're going you need to let the bird show you how to get there." He held out the second vial which he had switched with the first while Kovu was demorphing.
Kovu:
Kovu didn't waste any time. He poured a few drops of blood on his hand, and started to acquire the magpie. He capped the vial and placed it on a nearby chair. Kovu focused on the bird, even though he had never seen a magpie before. This morph we more smoothly then the last. First his mouth became hard, and formed a long beak. Then he started shrinking again. His feet became hard and bumpy as they transformed into talons. Then a feather pattern spread across his body. Realistic tattoos that suddenly became 3D. He heard a distinct gurgle as his intestines rearranged. His arms stretched into full wings, and the morph was complete.
The magpie's personality bubbled under his own. The magpie wanted to get away. Kovu didn't fight it, he wanted to fly anyways. Kovu took off, flapping hard to get off the ground. That's when Kovu started to take control. He spun around trying to get above the trees. He flapped, and managed to get above the building and glided around the area. Kovu perched on the rail of the deck, and awaited instruction.
Matt:
Matt watched the morph take place. Changing to a bird was always sort of neat. Matt himself could use a new bird morph at some point. He still only had his bat and hummingbird, neither of which was good for much other than just flying. He wasn't actually sure if he needed a new morph yet though. He'd only just gotten one when Aubrey had joined the group and beside that he had no clue what morph to give himself. He needed to look.
He watched as Kovu took off and circled the Haunt. He wasn't sure whether it was the boy or the bird in control for the most part. It was when he perched on the deck, close to a large body the magpie would have probably wanted to avoid, that Matt decided it was Kovu in control. "Great. For now that's all you get so you can practice with either of them if you want. Otherwise I know morphing can be tiring. If you need a rest there's a set of stairs in the Haunt's main room that leads up to a loft with three beds in it. One of those is empty right now and you can probably take it since the other people sleeping up there are guys." That was the main reason Aubrey hadn't been given the bed when Steve had left. Jullian had claimed a bed in the loft when he, Rian, and Matt had first arrived at the Haunt. It had been 'boy territory' ever since.
Kovu:
He hopped on the ground and began to Demorph, after it was over he looked wearily at Matt. "maybe tomorrow you can introduce me to evryone, I only saw people during my two second commute to the bathroom." Kovu walked drearily up stairs. He layed down, looked around at the other beds, and quickly fell asleep.
He woke up the next morning and headed downstairs to the kitchen

Not when we're the only resistance the planet has.>>
Kovu:

We. With that word Matt was implying that there was at least one other Animorph. Actually, there were several.

Kovu clamped down on the familliar emoion, and skidded to a stop in front of the tree.
