Animorphs is a science fiction series of young adult books written by K. A. Applegate and published by Scholastic. Five human children and one alien obtained the ability to morph into any animal they touch (alien technology). Using their ability, they battle a secret alien infiltration of Earth by the yeerks, a parasitic species that can infest and take over the body of another being.
The humans, who called themselves the Animorphs, fought a secret guerilla war for three years against a vastly superior force...and won. But what fun would that be for us? The premises of this RP is that they lost.
In book 49 of the series the animorphs' identities were finally compromised and they had to run and go underground with their families in order to escape from the yeerks. It was a bad time for the resistant effort since the yeerk in charge of the invasion, Visser One, had just gotten permission to go ahead with a full force invasion instead of an infiltration.
The animorphs tried to alert the various governments of the world to the danger they faced but they did so too late. Human resistance was overrun all over the world, human military might no match for superior yeerk technology. Even when a few Andalites landed to help with the war effort there were not enough of them to make a difference.
One by one the animorphs themselves died until there were only two left, Cassie and Ax (Aximili-Esgarrouth-Isthill). When Ax died the Andalites decided to cut their losses and left Earth, promising to return in greater force.
A promise Cassie doubted and so she begged them to leave Earth with at least one last wall of defense, morphing cubes so that she could make more animorphs. They reluctantly released a few into her possession and then they made their escape from an Earth that now resembled a post apocolyptic dystopia instead of the flourishing planet it had once been. And is that any surprise? The world humanity had known and built had ended.
Cassie, now a young woman, spent the next few years wandering America and carefully recruiting people to join her new force of animorphs. Those recruited first in turn left to recruit others and small pockets of resistance started to spring up in the biggest cities of America such as Chicago, Las Vegas, Boston and Dallas. But when these resistance forces suffered almost crippling losses Cassie realized she had to spread the resistance even further. After all, this was not just America's fight, but all of humanity's fight.
Entrusting a morphing cube to one of her long time animorphs, Cassie sent them off to recruit people all over the world.
