Fin pulled the sweatshirt on and zipped it up. It was one of the odd pieces of clothing he still had lying around his family's lodge. Most of his extra clothing had gone to the others that could fit it. They didn't really have stuff of their own thanks to the skin-tight only limitation of morphing and he would have felt like a real douche for having drawers full of clothing and sharing none of it.
But he'd kept this sweatshirt for himself since it had been one of his favorites. He wasn't taking much though, just what could fit in his back pack. Some clothes, some food and water though he was really counting on being able to steal what he would need, and of course the morphing cube.
The cube glowed a soft blue in the darkness of the back pack. Fin still had no idea why he'd taken the thing, it had just seemed like a good idea. Which was foolish, it was most likely a suicidal idea. When Matthias got back and found the cube gone and Fin with it he would hunt him down or at least he would try. But Fin had forgotten more about blending in, sneaking around and in general keeping out of trouble in an environment that encouraged it than Matthias had ever learned. New Canaan wasn't exactly Brooklyn but as a minor drug dealer you had to have some street smarts.
Oh well, Matthias shouldn't have been so careless in hiding it. Though Fin had to admit that if he hadn't woken up just at the right time to see Matthias sneaking out of the Lodge in the middle of the night he probably wouldn't have even noticed the fridge and cube had moved let alone been able to find it. Odd coincidence.
He zipped up the backpack and pulled on his coat since he would need much more than a sweatshirt in the Vancouver winter. In fact, if he was smart he wouldn't be moving around at all outside but he had to go so that meant bundling up. He wrapped the scarf around his neck and face and pulled a wool cap on his head and over his ears. Lastly he put his gloves on and pushed his double socked feet into his boots. Then he realized he couldn't tie his boots with gloves on, took the gloves off, tied the boots and put the gloves back on.
He walked down the hallway, the morning glow just starting to come through the windows and headed down to the basement. A couple of months ago he had been getting ready to set off on a journey just like this. Of course it had been summer back then and he'd hadn't needed half the winter gear he was carrying with him now.
But that trip had been cut short by running into an uncanningly intelligent deer. The encounter had led to his joining (as if he'd had a choice) of the animorphs and he'd been stuck here. But now he was leaving again and like last time he was determined to take his bow with him.
He picked up the case that held the weapon from the shelf where he had stored it so long ago and slung it over his shoulder under his back pack. He didn't bother taking many arrows, just the five that would lay flat under the back pack. The weapon wouldn't help him any against any real enemies he might encounter and would only be good for catching him food if he ever became desperate enough to need to hunt.
With this last addition Fin was ready to go.
He walked back upstairs and stuck his note on the fridge for the faction to find and then let himself out. Matthias had left him in charge of the faction when he'd set off with Aida for the faction leaders meeting yesterday evening. But Fin shouldn't really be in charge of anyone's safety. He told Lukas and Meredith that they were in charge until he got back even though he didn't plan on coming back. He'd made up some reason about having to check out a new city as a new faction possibility and hoped it would keep them from coming after him too soon.
As he walked away heading south (which would eventually lead to warmer climes) he was surprised a bit at the pang of sadness he felt at leaving. Everyone in Vancouver had at least been a friendly acquaintance and some had been quite a bit more than that. They didn't deserve this war. All of them should be able to just lead normal lives and not have to worry about being killed or watching others die. But if they chose to stay here and be part of that then he couldn't stop them. He wasn't going to be a part of it anymore.
Good luck guys, he thought back at the small cabin and the people it held. He had to get as far away as possible before Lukas woke up to take over the patrol Fin was supposed to be running tonight so he just set his head against the cold wind and slipped into the pre-dawn gloom and didn't look back.
((So I felt like there should be some type of record of how Fin left so that you guys could refer to it in posts if you had to. I hate when you have to avoid something IC just because no one posted exactly how it happened so I wrote this. You guys can respond if you like or just leave it as it is. Whatever works for you. Fin's letter))
Mel:
Melanie head the footsteps against the cabin's wood floor and after debating it for a few moments, she morphed to cat. Hopping down from the bed, she padded forward, listening, trying to figure out what had m ade the noise. Most of the faction was still asleep, except for FIn and whoever else was with him doing patrol, but she didn't think they could be too cautious. All was quiet by the time she made it out into the lodge's living area.
She caught sight of the letter when she hopped up on the table to get a better look at things, and a possible attack base if someone had broke in. It was hard to read with cat eyes though. They were designed to see movement, and anything standing still was a blur. After a while though she managed to decipher it. It didn't occur to her to follow him or anything, she, like the others, didn't know until later on that he wasn't coming back. That either he'd abandoned them like Matthias had or he'd been killed or something.
Lukas:
Lukas yawned heavily, and rubbed his eyes. These early morning patrols were killing him. He loved his sleep, and anything that got in the way could damn well burn in hell for all he cared. Still, he had a responsibility, and he wasn't one for shirking his responsibilities. He rolled over and squinted through bleary eyes at the angry red numbers on his clock face. Yup, it was time for patrols all right, as if the shrieks of the machine hadn't already alerted him to that fact. He groaned weakly and sat up. The room was still dark, the great burning ball of hydrogen far off in space having not yet had the time to blaze down upon this half of the planet yet. "I hate tuesdays." Lukas growled, though he wasn't sure exactly what day of the week it was right now. Keeping track of these things wasn't too important. But he did know the date. And he was fairly sure it was a tuesday.
It felt like a tuesday.
Lukas crawled out of bed and pulled his morphing suit on clumsily, missing his trouser leg twice in the attempt. He cursed harshly, though not too loud in case he woke the others. At last, satisfied he was suitably attired, Lukas pulled the door of his room open and wandered down to the kitchen. He needed a pick-me-up before he departed, and a cup of tea was just what the doctor ordered. He yawned as he flipped the light on, only to spot Mel, in cat morph, peering at a piece of paper. He wandered over. "What're you doing up? And what's that?" He inquired, striding over and grabbing the letter. He then read the scrawled writing.
Lukas read the note, feeling unrationally annoyed by what he was reading. Like they weren't understaffed already. First Matthias had gone off to the faction leader meeting, dragging Aida along. Lukas hadn't had a problem with that, since Aida seemed pretty miserable, and probably needed to get out of the area. However, now that Fin had wandered off on his own, with no apparent regard for the rest of them. He noted that he'd been left in charge, along with Meredith, and thought little of it. He did, however, flush red when he saw Fin's comment about he and Meredith mooning at each other. He wasn't sure why, because he certainly knew that things between the two of them hadn't gone unnoticed by the remainder of the faction, and it wasn't something he was embarressed about. Upon finishing the letter, Lukas snorted derisively. "Bloody idiot. Better get his arse back up here quickly." He then shrugged at Mel, placed the letter upon the counter, and began morphing his goose. Might as well get his patrol done now, he was up.
Mel:
Melanie watched Lukas come in, licking her paw and washing her face with it as he did.
<Fin left...I got up because I heard noise. You can't be too careful around here. Now I was trying to read his note, but these things aren't easy with cat's eyes. I did make it out though.> she replied. Lukas made a comment about Fin getting his rear back here and Mel nodded her cat's head. <Definately, we can't afford any more abandoment."> SHe was still bitter about Matthias.
She watched Lukas morph, apparently going into his goose form. *patrol* she thought. <Well since I'm up, I might as well go with you. No way I'll get back to sleep now. Just hang on.> She demorphed, and then remorphed to deer. <I'll take the ground while you go by air. > She said as she followed him out.
But he'd kept this sweatshirt for himself since it had been one of his favorites. He wasn't taking much though, just what could fit in his back pack. Some clothes, some food and water though he was really counting on being able to steal what he would need, and of course the morphing cube.
