Joshua:
Joshua opened the eye of the boy lying on his bed. He had third degree burns over %90 of his body and had to be one of the worst victims from the dam fiasco. At least one of the ones that had made it out alive of the so many that hadn't.
But after checking on his condition one more time Joshua resigned himself to moving on. The boy was not of the highest rank and others needed his attention.
Joshua walked over to the Sub-Visser who was waiting to have her finger or lack there-of looked at. He nodded to her politily as he sat down in front of her and began examining her finger.
Bryan:
Bryan woke up a few seconds after the doctor had checked in on him. He wasn't surprised to awaken and found that everything hurt. He was surprised to find that he wasn't in excruciating pain or dead. The last thing he remembered was being on the shores of Lake Mead and he hadn't been in good shape.
He turned his head slowly to look around and saw controllers in all states of injury sitting and lying on hospital beds all around him, the medical facilities obviously hastily assembled.
He closed his eyes again and willed himself through the next breath and the pain that accompanied it. Breath, he told himself. Just breath.
Tenaj:
Tenaj was waiting on the hospital bed. After that.....fiasco at the dam, it took every fiber of her being to just stay still. She wanted to go out and kill those insects. Find some free humans and kill them for the hell of it. Something to make her feel better.
Not only was she probably going ot have scars from the claw marks of that leopard, but she also had lost a finger. Luckily, it was her host's right hand and the ring finger. It shouldn't hinder her much, but it still pissed her off. How dare that girl........oh she would find her one day soon. And she would make her wish for death.
She then noticed the one who would be examining her approach. She held out her hand reluctantly. To have to show a moment of weakness....it was disgusting. She let him look at her hand as she looked around the room they were in.
Joshua:
Joshua didn't wince when he saw the amputated finger. It would have been bad bedside manner and lowly human or high ranking Visser they were all patients when they came to him. He took out a small reader from the pocket of the white coat he wore around controllers and briefly scanned her.
Besides for the finger she had only received minor cuts and bruises, all easily healed. Her heart rate was a little higher than he'd like but that was understandable in the aftermath of a disaster of this magnitude. They were still waiting on reports of what exactly had happened on the dam. There were rumors that rebels had been involved but nothing had been confirmed.
He began to treat the finger first and an associate and superior of his came over and began telling the Sub-Visser what the injury meant in a calm tone. "We can't reattach the finger since we don't have it. And unfortunately attaching a prosthetic is also impossible because of the nature of the wound. The cauterization you performed stopped the bleeding but it damaged the nerves. In time they may re-grow enough to be a candidate for one of our prosthetics but at this time there is not much I can do for you. Perhaps you would like a new host?" Joshua listened to the man lecturing the Sub-Visser and marvaled at how easily he assumed she would throw her body away. Unfortunately it wasn't such a wrong assumption.
He finished treating her finger.. It shouldn't pain her now and it would heal over within the next couple of days.
He got up and moved on to the lacerations on her arm, spraying a pain reliever and sanitizing liquid on the wounds before applying a gel like substance that would close them within the hour. Controllers of lesser rank had to be stitched up the old fashioned way but Sub-Visser 30 was the highest ranking yeerk here and she got the scare gel instead.
Tenaj:
Tenaj listened to this person as patiently as she could. Though the news could've been better. She couldn't have a prosthetic? "What?" she asked, angry. He had said that she might get one later, but she wanted it now. Apparently it was impossible at the moment.
And then he asked if she would like a new host and that made her more angry. "This body is mine." she said coldly. She wouldn't get another host, this one was hers. It was her body to use as she saw fit.
He then moved onto her arm and appled the gel. Good, it looked like she might not get scars there after all. She looked around the room and happened to take notice at the burned patient in the room. It was him......that Animorph. "What is he doing here?!" she asked angrily.
Joshua:
Joshua looked over at the young man in question as he finished treating the wounds on the Visser's arm. He didn't know that there was anything unusual about the controller so the Visser's question puzzled him.
His official looked over at the young man and said in a dismissive tone. "Just another hurt no rank. He was severly burned in at the dam. It looks like he was scalded. I don't know how he managed that. He would have had to take a swim in some very hot water to get burns all over his body like that." Joshua stopped treating the Visser for a moment and regarded the controller on the other bed.
The other doctors had quickly treated his wounds and left him but Joshua had ordered him put into an anit-grav field. They were similar to the technology used in the drop shafts on the space crafts but used a lot less power and so only extended a short distance. He found them useful for the rare cases like the boy's where it would be best if the patient didn't touch anything.
The controller was floating maybe an inch above the surface of his bed and his body was swathed in cloths, healing gel applied liberally underneath them. And still, with all that care, he would be horribly scarred at best. If he woke up that is.
It was an interesting case, at least to Joshua. He could think of a view people who might agree with him but that was something to consider later. Right now he had to make sure he lived.
"Is there something you need to know about him," the other doctor asked the Visser. "I can try to wake him up if you like?"
Bryan:
Bryan had his eyes closed but his ears open. He was listening carefully to everything around him since it was the only way he could interact with the world around him. Even thinking about speaking sounded like it would hurt. It hurt to breath, the skin on his chest stretching painfully.
He heard the conversation going on and listened grimly to the report on his condition from the doctor.
He worried a bit about why the Visser might be interested in him but in the end it didn't really matter. There wasn't much he could do to defend himself except just lie here.
Tenaj:
Tenaj listened as he explained what had happened to this pest. She didn't understand, she had no recollection of this Animorph gaining burns like that. She would've remembered and enjoyed that sight.
"This boy has caused me a lot of trouble," she told Joshua. "He shouldn't even be left alive......." Though she was confused. This was an Animorph right? Couldn't he morph and get out of here? Hmm.....this might not be as black and white as she first thought.
"I want him able to speak in the next hour." she told the doctor. "I need to have a chat....."
Alora:
There was a crash and a guttural yell as a deranged woman broke through the curtains separating the rooms, chased by several nurses who were trying to sedate her.
"Stay away from me!" Alora shouted, sweeping half a pipe she'd broken from her IV drip. "I didn't ask for your help!" She snarled, most of her broken fingers in splints and her leg already in a cast. Her hospital robe was torn and revealed the stiches that ran up and down her back, though she'd managed to steal some scrub pants from the locker room. There was also a fresh needle mark jabbed hastily into her arm where she'd injected enough adrenaline to counteract the drugs they'd given her.
Alora swung, hitting an orderly who'd gotten too close, narrowly missing hitting Joshua on the back swing. The orderly crumpled, sending the two nurses staggering under his weight as they tried to catch him. After that they kept their distance and Vanim was free to examine her surroundings. With one look she caught sight of the sub-visser, with another she spotted someone far more interesting. "Bryan?" Alora's hand shot out and dragged Joshua forward, glaring at the medic with manic hatred, "What did you do to him?!"
Joshua:
"Yes Sub-Visser," the man said as Joshua finished with the minor cuts and bruises. The doctor looked at him as if to say make sure it gets done and Joshua nodded. Seemingly satisfied with his show of obedience the guy walked away.
With the Empire's higher ups it was just easier to agree with them though Joshua would not wake a patient that needed sleep if the Council of Thirteen had asked him to let alone a Sub-Visser that wasn't even local.
He packed up the small kit he had used to treat her and began to get ready to move on to other patients when he heard a scuffle behind him. He turned around to put a stop to the commotion in the clinic when he was grabbed by what seemed to be a very insane and very injured woman. He looked down at her hands and saw that her fingers had been taped together in order to keep them still. They were probably broken and she was doing them only more harm by using them in this way.
He repressed a sigh of annoyance. Controllers made the worst patients. The yeerks in their head were too disconnected from their bodies, they simply didn't seem to prize them as much as the free humans did who only got one.
Joshua pried the fingers from the front of his coat with gentle hands trying not to hurt them anymore than they already were. It wasn't that hard to make her let go. He didn't know what she was on but her fingers were still broken. He waved over some orderlies to help him get her back under control and into a bed where those broken bones of hers could heal. What was with this young man. He didn't envy the kid, he seemed to have a lot of trouble waiting for him when he woke up.
A frown crossed his face as he took in the cast on her leg. This was really going too far. He took her arm in a firm grip and began leading her to a bed. She may have been able to throw off one of the orderlies but she wouldn't do the same to him.
Bryan:
"I'm awake...." Bryan said weakly his eyes still closed against the pain. He was hoping that the doctor close by would hear him and maybe give him some sort of pain medication but as he thought that he realized that they probably had already and he'd just burned through it.
And when he heard the doctor (and his chance at more pain meds) walking away he gave up that hope. He would just have to deal with the pain for now.
Bryan tried to remind himself that pain hallowed you. What was his suffering compared to others? A lot, his mind answered rebelliously. But Bryan pushed that voice away. He would get through this. God would see him through this.
Erik:
It seemed as though every controller in Vegas was in the hospital. Isath snarled at the others shuffling through the hallway. He was here to see Sazoril, naturally. Her host body had to endure complicated surgery to repair her arm. Nerves to be reconnected, flesh to be sewn back together. Erik counted himself lucky to have only the bandage that protected the nasty bump on his head. Neither Isath nor Erik could remember exactly what happened, but they both knew that it had hurt.
He walked casually into the hospital room, setting down the fresh set of clothes Erik had insisted Isath bring for Adele. When he looked up, Sazoril was watching him with misty, puffy eyes. She was beautiful. Erik wished that he could sweep her into his arms. He wished that he could have been there to protect her like he promised.
"Hello, love."
Alora:
Alora stared in horror as the man peeled her fingers away so very easily. The adrenaline, meant for restarting arrested hearts, was faltering and the crash was making her body weak. She wouldn't stand for it! Vanim pushed back at the oncoming wooziness, forcing Alora's fragile mind to make her body work again.
"Damn you, trying to manipulate me! I will not be-!" The world swerved under her as she tried to stand on her broken leg and pain rushed through her body. "Ergh!! There is nothing to take care of. Not by you!" Alora struck at Joshua with a flat hand, right at the base of his neck, hitting a nerve that caused him to let her go. She leaned heavily on her off leg and found that small movement had already worn most of her energy away. Her brain slipped into the adrenaline's crash and her vision darkened. "Damn you, damn you, damn...!" She muttered, shoving him away and stumbling toward the window. The nurse and staff had somehow circled around her when she wasn't aware and blocked off the other exits. Alora pitched forward and slammed her fist into the glass, but all that did was hurt her hand as it rebounded off. Instead of an escape, she fell against the window pane, breathing heavily with half closed eyes and blood seeping through her bandages.
Joshua:
Joshua waved some people over and they got the woman into a bed and sedated...again. He made sure she was strapped down this time before he walked out of the room and looked for others that needed his help. He was one of the few doctors left in Vegas. Most of the "doctors" were actually scientist and more interested in studying how to reattach limbs and regrow skin rather than in actually helping people. Most didn't want to get their hands dirty.
But this is what he loved so this is what he did. He walked into Adele Nash's room and saw Erik sitting by the bed. He knew the couple well though to label them that would have been death to both their careers. He looked at Adele's chart and then began checking on her arm. He hadn't been the one to perform the surgery but the "doctor" who had was just another one of the scientist who was in it for the thrill. Her surgery had required that nerves be reattached and they had even injected some of the newer nannites into her blood to speed the healing and regeneration of the cut muscle.
She seemed to be doing fine so he looked up at Isath. He walked over and raised an eyebrow at the large bandage covering his temple and the spot behind his ear. It seemed no one had escaped this day unscathed. He would like to examine Erik too but waited until he had permission.
Tenaj:
Tenaj was still looking over the boy, puzzled. This was one of the Animorphs wasn't it? Though soon there was a commotion, as one of the.....patients made a ruckuss. How dare she inturrupt them. She couldn't help but look at her coldly, for her impudence.
Though it was soon taken care of. That doctor took her away and soon it left the room with just her and the boy. She looked over him still trying to figure this out. Though to her surprise he started to speak. "So you are...." she responded.
"I know who you are," she told him. "What did they call you? Rian was it? I know you're an Animorph and you shouldn't even be alive right now...." She was postive this was the person, there couldn't be anyone else. "You're lucky that I have questions.....and you are going to answer them,"
Bryan:
Bryan just looked at the Sub-Visser above him. He couldn't really say much at the moment. His eyes were constantly tearing besides his conscious effort to make them stop and the water ran out the corners of his eyes and through his hair to drip on the sheets below him. There were bandages on various parts of his face covering burns he'd received from splashing water and it was the prettiest place on his body right now. The sheet over him only covered him from the waist down since extra pressure on his skin was to be avoided. But he was covered all the same, his torso and arms swathed in white bandages.
"Brother..." he croaked out at Rian's name and his eyes met the woman's. There was an intensity in them and it was the only place where his elation at hearing Rian's name showed. But...an animorph? How...
Bryan knew what the animorphs were. He could hardly help knowing since that cat girl in Vancouver. And then again today, animorphs had been the cause of this accident. The cause of this pain. Could his brother really be a part of that? He didn't really want to think about it, didn't want to believe it. No matter what he ended up feeling it would take time to figure himself out, time and effort that he simply didn't have in him right now. Just dealing was hard enough.
"Bryan," he said after a moment. "My name." He met her eyes again and then let them drift to the IV going into his arm. "Pain. Meds?" he asked. He didn't know who she was but she didn't look like a doctor. Still, maybe she could get to one. Maybe they could make the pain stop. Somehow.
Adele:
"Hello, love."
Adele's lips were chapped and cracking. Sazoirl understood now why Chapstick was such a wonderful invention. The words left her dry mouth and the for a moment Sazoirl, and Adele, could see Erik through Isath's guise. With all the sincerity she could muster, Sazoirl addressed her partner in crime.
"Thank you. It would have been unfortunate if I had been where I was when the dam exploded." Of course she knew. Slipping in and out of consciousness in the backseat of her husband's car allowed brief bits of information to sift through her pain-muddled mind. Erik had told her too, in passing, on the drive back into the city after he himself had awoken. Sazoirl changed her tone. "And my car?"
Naturally the Porsche was gone. Either buried or just gone. An emotion, that of the pain of loss, fluttered past Sazoirl, courtesy of Adele, but it passed as quickly as it came.
"There's a new one waiting in the garage." Erik coolly dictated. Almost flirty.
<<Oh, that's right. Money turns you on.>> Sazoirl chose to be sarcastic, using human idioms.
<<Shouldn't it? Money is power.>>
Isath approached the bedside, a shadow from his hair concealing his host's bright blue eyes. He put his lips to Adele's blond hair, to her ear, and whispered. The last bit of his words was louder than the rest as anger visibly rose in the two Controllers. They had lost a great deal and every sorry Yeerk involved would pay a great price.
Erik:
A young doctor entered, examining Adele's vitals and her healing arm. The pain she had was manageable. The man was quiet as he eyed Erik, clearly noting the bandage on his head. A frown crossed Isath's host's face and he sighed.
Joshua:
Joshua quickly checked out the wound on Erik's head. It had been a bit of a nasty gash but it had been treated well and Joshua just ended up replacing the bandage before bowing out and leaving the couple to themselves.
He wasn't sure how he felt about such a pairing. Partially it gave him hope for the future, but it also made him wonder how long they could hope to last in these times. He hoped that nothing happened to either one, at least nothing related to their marriage.
He walked through the hallways of the hospital and back out through the doors that separated it from the clinic where they were treating the less serious cases. There was still a lot of work to be done out here so Joshua set himself to the task of cleaning cuts and stitching up deeper wounds. It was simple work but it was really satisfying to him.
Tenaj:
Tenaj raised an eyebrow at his words. This Rian....was this one's brother? Must be twins. Well, well what were the odds? The boy in front her soon croaked out a name. Bryan. Hmm.....that was odd also. Yeerks didn't typically give out thier host's name as theirs. Could he be.....free?
She was thinking this over when the boy asked about medication. She couldn't help but let out a "Hmph". The boy didn't know who he was talking too. "I know nothing about your meds," she told him.
This....Bryan, intrigued her. Maybe a free human, but that Rian had a brother. And she could use that to her advantage.
Bryan:
When Tenaj dismissed his inquiry about the medication Bryan sagged with disappointment though the movement was more of a loosening of tense muscles than any actually movement since he was currently being held in place by whatever was keeping him floating above the bed.
He closed his eyes. He just wanted to go to sleep and pretend like this day had never happened. But she had spoken of Rian and he knew that, no matter how much pain he was in, he couldn't ignore the first source of information he had had about his brother in more than a year.
He was glad though oddly not surprised to hear that Rian was alive. Maybe he would have been yesterday but there had been that odd dream in the lake...
But an animorph? Could his brother really be one of the infamous rebels that he had come to hate so much? He didn't want to believe that. His eyes popped open and a fierce anger and hatred burned there. "Animorphs." The word was whispered and said through much pain but it just contained all of his emotions better for that. The animorphs had put him in this bed, they had done this to him. "Where?" he asked Tenaj though he wasn't even really sure what he was asking. Was he asking her where they were? For what reason? Even if she knew it was not like he could jump out of this bed and go track them down. He couldn't do anything thanks to them. But once he was out of here, he would find a way to pay them back in kind.
Tenaj:
The boy seemed disappointed by her words, but what was Tenaj to do? She didn't know where the pain meds where. And she didn't know what this one's dosage was to be. And she didn't quite feel like harming this one. Not yet, he seemed he could be useful.
And soon she heard that all too familiar word. Animorphs. It burned with the same hatred as when the yeerks said it. She had her suspicions this one was a free human, but his hate for the Animorphs made them on the same page. Perhaps she could use this human, at least for a little while.
"I wish I knew," she told him, though she was now grinning. "You hate them don't you? Well how bout we find a way to get rid of them for good, hmmm?"
Joshua opened the eye of the boy lying on his bed. He had third degree burns over %90 of his body and had to be one of the worst victims from the dam fiasco. At least one of the ones that had made it out alive of the so many that hadn't.
