Tenaj
Tenaj was exstatic. She had finished up most of the calls she needed to make. After capturing that troublesome resistance fighter and to find out he was Animorph as well, big changes where happening. She was to be promoted. She was now Visser 47.
She was also heading for Washington DC. Which meant she needed a replacement here. And she had just the person in mind. She called up the number and waited until she heard a voice on the other line.
"Hello, Sedra. This is Tenaj and I have some news for you," she said into the phone.
Sedra
"Sub-Visser."
Sedra ignored the assistant's voice. She was seated at her desk, soft face painted by the gentle glow of her computer monitor. It was in the middle of the afternoon over at Area 51, and Sedra was working. She didn't have time to listen to the stupid prattling and mumbling of her assistant--especially not this one. He usually came in to bother her about stupid things: This isn't working correctly, what do we do? What do we do with this? We did this, but it didn't work right. Whine, whine, whine.
"Sub-Visser, there's a call waiting for you."
"I'm busy right now," She murmured, one finger resting on the computer's keyboard. For the past two hours she had been scrolling through a long, heavy report from the weapon's testing sector. Apparently some of the workers had calculated numbers wrong, and ended up exploding apart the new weapon, as well as another controller. They didn't have their medical facility up and running yet--thanks so much to the Animorphs for that--so the controller was being rushed on the hour-long trip to Las Vegas. The report was full of details, but it was all very dull. Hard to give all her attention to. Since all the recent things that had happened to Sedra, her mind was distracted, scattered.
"It's from Tenaj."
Sedra glanced up from her screen. Tenaj? Her worries strayed to Kiejen for a moment. Had he done something stupid? Sighing, she straightened and pushed her chair back from her desk. The assistant hurried forward from his perch in the doorway, holding out the phone to her. She snatched it from his hands, then shooed him away with a motion of her hand. "Hello?"
Tenaj
"Ah, there you are Sedra," Tenaj said to her when she heard the voice on the other end. "I have some exciting news that affects us both," She wondered what Sedra's reaction would be.
No point in delaying it. "I have just been promoted. I am now Visser 47." she said into the phone. She turned from where she was to stare out the window. "And I am transferring over to Washington, DC becasue of it,"
She paused for a moment before continuing. "Which means Chicago's plant is going to need someone to run it." she told Sedra. "And I choose you, Sedra. Congratulations.....Sub-Visser 42"
Sedra
Sedra moved across the carpeted floor to the wide window, leaning her shoulder and head against the warm pane of glass. She had a view of the facility's courtyard, as well as the gate and the desert that lay beyond that. It was quiet today.
"Afternoon Tenaj. Pleasant hearing from you," Sedra said, her voice mellow. "Oh? Do tell." At least Tenaj didn't seem pissed, that was good news so far. Then Tenaj revealed the news. Visser? Washington D.C.? Sedra's first gut reaction was a pang of jealousy. She shifted on her feet, then turned her ear and face away from the phone. Visser. That was a big jump. After her first reaction ebbed, a smile curled on her lip. She knew that Tenaj would be happy.
She searched for Catherine's reaction, some sort of sarcastic comment about Sedra not being good enough or something. But Catherine had retreated back. She was silent. Sedra's lip twitched. She didn't like to admit it, but she hated when her host did that. She turned her attention back to the conversation with Tenaj.
"Congratulations, Visser. That is exciting news. I'm sure Chicago will miss you." It was said in all sincerity. Despite Sedra's little bouts of jealousy, she still felt a great comradeship with the now Visser. It was nice to have an ally among the higher ranks of Sub-Vissers and Vissers, among all the back-stabbing throat-slitters of the Yeerk world.
At the second bit of news, Sedra leaned away from the window. "Wow." She hadn't meant to say that out loud, but it was unexpected. Being promoted a few ranks and placed in charge of the John Hancock Building all in one breath. The experimenting facility had always been a fascination and desire of hers, and now it had just fallen neatly into her lap. Regaining herself, she leaned back against the window. She wasn't sure how to react. "I... uh. Thank you, Visser. I appreciate that beyond words."
Tenaj
Tenaj smiled at Sedra's reaction. She seemed completely taken aback. Granted it was a little out of nowhere, but it was entertaining all the same.
"No problem, Sedra," she responded. "I can not wait to see what you can do with this facility at your disposal." She paused for a moment. "In fact, would you mind keeping me informed of what goes on? If its not too much trouble?"
She turned away from the window. "I'm still interested in the happenings of this place." she told her. "And if you ever need something let me know. Being that I was the last person in charge here, I know a lot about this place."
Sedra
Sedra smirked. The plant was well-equipped for whatever Sedra would have in mind, and she could probably even transfer some experiments from Area 51 over to there. Just being in possession of the place excited the scientist in her. There were possibilities to do things she hadn't been able to before.
The thought seemed to stir Catherine, but again her host said nothing. It didn't matter, Sedra could read her thoughts, she knew how her host felt.
She shifted the phone to her other ear. "No trouble at all, Tenaj. I'd be glad to." She paused. "Will you be visiting often?" She wondered if it meant the Visser planned on checking up on her. Normally the idea would be irritating--most Yeerks liked to butt their own business into their subordinates' plans--but Tenaj would probably prove to be an asset if she ever visited the plant.
"Thank you, I will keep that in mind. I'm going to probably be coming to check the plant out as soon as I am able to, work is busy lately. I hope you do well over in Washington. Thanks again." Once the Visser hung up, Sedra let out a small sigh and placed the phone down.
Idly, her gaze sweep out to the window, to the warm desert landscape stretched out beyond the facility walls. She was happy to have been promoted, of course, and the acquisition of the plant was more than she could have asked for. In fact, it wasn't a stretch to say she deserved them both, it had been long overdue.
But now, suddenly, there was a heap more responsibility dumped on her shoulders. She was already having trouble juggling her own personal problems with her job, and with her duty as a servant of the Empire. It mean that part of her time would have to be spent over in Chicago now, officially. She would be spending gaps of time away from Area 51, away from Las Vegas. It bothered her in some small way. Her thoughts went to Eva. To Luce. And she was feeling something, an emotion she didn't quite want to acknowledge was there.
It was Catherine who said it. <<You miss her.>>
