Gabriel rubbed his arm, the spot on his shoulder where Xander had punched him throbbing lightly but not too bad. He laughed at Xander's and Jon's reactions to Seiya's name. "Made you look," he said to Xander, grinning. He'd made Jon look too but he just turned to Jon with an amused look, inviting the other recruit to share in his amusement at Xander's smartass, tough and wounded pride.
"He's right though, we'll be fine. What's the worst that can happen," he continued shrugging as they set off down the hallway after Xander. Gabriel had never been to the labs either and he didn't know the way but he trusted Xander to get them there. "So Jon, never really got to talk to you before. Where'ya from and all of that. What are your deep, dark secrets? Confessions suit the middle of the night, don't you think."

"Uh... huh. Something new, right right," Jon followed behind, shrugging off the brief feeling of panic he had felt before. It wasn't like he was a little kid, worrying that his parents might wake up in the other room. As far as he knew, it wasn't against the rules to walk around at night. He gave a half-amused smirk at Gabe as Xander punched him on the shoulder. "The worst? Being put in time-out." It was a somewhat lame attempt at joke, and the smirk on his face disappeared slightly at Gabe's question.
His gaze grew slightly distant, distracted. Then he seemed to snap out of it, looking to the side as they walked. "Well, I'm from Seattle. The Northwest, and all that." There was a twinge of pride in his voice at the mention of his hometown, and the location. Seattle did produce its snobs, as he'd once been told. Skipping Gabe's second question, Jon deflected the conversation back, "Where are you two from?"

“Wanker,” Xander threw the V sign at Gabe. “Besides from what I recall that story took place in some over glorified runes. The current situation calls for something much more sci-fi or action flick-y. Code names are much more in order wouldn’t you say Gage?” It was a sucky nickname but he couldn’t be the sharpest knife in the drawer on a moment’s notice every second of the day. Though it did open up the opportunity to ask him to Gage the distance and at that thought he smiled to himself.
He straightened a bit at Jon’s question. Shrugging it off he locked his fingers behind his head, “Oh ya know,” he sent a warning glance at Legend, “Here, there, everywhere. Bit of a traveler myself.”

Gabriel looked at Xander as if he'd uttered something that did not speak well of his intelligence. He had been nicknamed a lot of things in his life but Gage? It wasn't the word itself. He actually kind of liked the sound of it. It reminded him of car commercials with hot women driving through European streets, their hair flying, their eyes narrowed in alluring concentration and their manicured hands and delicate fingers locked around expensive, leather covered stick shifts. Power drinks and european dance clubs with pounding techno music that got into your head if not your heart and made you want to jump. Long nights full of flashing lights...
Yes, he liked the sound of it and as he contemplated these things he got a bit of a dreamy look on his face, forgetting completely why he hadn't liked the name to begin with and the witty insult he'd been preparing to throw back at Xander.
Catching the end of Xander's answer Gabriel chimed in with his own. "I'm from LA to begin with. Union after that which is LA but hidden." He went on to describe the city that had grown up under the yeerk held metropolis, hidden from view in the sunken train station that had once been a hub of transportation for the whole west coast. It was mostly in ruins now but the walls had held when it had sunk into the ground, collapsing into the tunnels that had run below it, and their were some tunnels that still connected to the surrounding subway tunnels, giving the residents of Union a convenient way to travel around the city unmolested to get the supplies they needed to survive. Gabriel had been one of the people in the army of scavengers that kept the city alive and he told them this with a hint of pride. It had been the most dangerous job to hold in Union and the best way to help his city...at least until he'd learned of the animorphs. Now he could help Union and help others as well.

Jon nodded his head. He'd traveled around himself, when he was younger. It was something both his parents had brought into his life; some of his earliest memories were standing on the streets of random cities, penniless and wandering. Folding his arms across his chest, Jon listened quietly to the banter between Xander and Gabe, the nick-name giving, and then Gabe's story about where he had come from. Union was the sort of place that the Yeerks always dreamed of finding--a large pool of new, free hosts fit for the rising population of Yeerks. It was surprising that such a place hadn't been discovered yet.
Once Gabe had finished, Jon glanced between the two other guys. "So where is this lab we're trying to find?" He was giving his best effort to drain the impatience from his voice. He was beginning to feel out of place with these two, and was feeling the desire to be back in a nice, warm, comfortable bed.

Xander listened idly as Gabriel talked about the Union. He’d heard of places like it and the recruit talk about it before but it was still a bit mind boggling. People that stayed in one place got themselves captured. That’s why Xander had stuck to the streets. That’s why he’d left his parents.
“Hold your horses,” he chuckled toward Jon, “It’s just up ahead, yard or so. Why you want the honor going in first?”
He pulled his hands out of his hoodie and rubbed them together as the door came into view. Xander palmed the door and stepped back as it slid open. Glancing over his shoulder he smiled and waited on the other boys.

"Yeah, go first Johnny boy," Gage said, pulling his head out of his own contemplations about hot European women. He looked around quickly, a slightly mischievous grin flashing across his face before the ephemeral expression disappeared.
"I like the name by the way. Xe," he said pointing to Xander, "Gage," he continued putting a hand on his own chest, "and Johnny boy," he said looking up. "I like it. Reminds me of all those tree house club meetings I never actually got to go to because we had no trees," Gage said with a shrug, not really minding the childhood loss.
